Agartala, February 09, 2026: Tripura is set to host a thalassemia awareness and treatment camp in the coming months, through a joint initiative of Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital & Medical Research Institute, Mumbai, and Tripura Santiniketan Medical College & Hospital.
Renowned physician Dr. Shantanu Sen, speaking at a thalassemia-related camp in Bolpur, West Bengal, announced that the program will be organized within the next two to three months. “Our team will visit Tripura Santiniketan Medical College to conduct a thalassemia awareness camp. Alongside awareness activities, medical consultations and services will also be provided to affected children,” he said.
Thalassemia, a hereditary blood disorder, often remains neglected due to lack of awareness. Many children and adolescents lose their lives to this condition. Recognizing the urgent need for intervention, the two institutions have partnered, supported by the government to protect future generations from the disease.
In the first phase, free HPLC tests will be conducted for men and women of marriageable age to identify carriers. Each participant will receive a certificate, with experts stressing that early screening is vital to preventing the spread of thalassemia.
The second phase will focus on children suffering from thalassemia major. Plans are underway to provide HLA Typing and I-BMT (bone marrow transplant)—the only permanent cure—completely free of cost. Normally priced between ₹40–45 lakh, this life-saving treatment will be made accessible to families under the initiative.
Tripura Santiniketan Medical College & Hospital President Malay Pit expressed optimism: “With government support and cooperation from Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, we are determined to organize this camp in Tripura. I believe this initiative will ensure a healthier future generation. If everyone becomes aware, we can build a thalassemia-free India.”
