Guwahati, Feb 10: Sanju Boruah, Vice Chairman of the Assam Congress Campaign Committee 2026, has resigned from the Indian National Congress, dealing a setback to the party ahead of the Assam Assembly elections.
Boruah, who also served as a senior spokesperson and executive member of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), cited allegations against State Congress Chief Gaurav Gogoi, who was accused of being a “Pakistani agent,” as the main reason for his resignation. In a letter to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday, Boruah described the claims made by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma as “matters of grave national concern.”
“With a deeply troubled conscience and an acute sense of responsibility towards the nation, I hereby tender my resignation from the primary membership of the Indian National Congress with immediate effect,” Boruah wrote. He criticised Gogoi’s leadership for a “persistent disconnect from grassroots realities, indifference towards people’s issues, and disregard for organisational discipline and party constitution.”
Boruah added that staying under the current leadership would compromise his principles, stating, “Sadly, under the present leadership of the APCC, I no longer believe that the party is ideologically, morally, or organisationally safe.”
The resignation comes after CM Sarma released findings of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) alleging “deep links” between Gogoi, his British wife Elizabeth Colburn Gogoi, and Pakistani national Ali Tauqeer Sheikh. Gogoi has denied the allegations, saying the SIT produced no evidence, and has urged the Supreme Court to take suo motu cognisance of Sarma for disclosing his children’s details to the media.
The development is expected to pose a challenge for the Congress party as it prepares for the Assam Assembly elections later this year.
