Agartala: February 11, 2026: The Tripura Rural Economic Growth and Service Delivery Project (TRESP), a flagship initiative of the Tribal Welfare Department, is steadily gaining momentum across the state, with significant progress reported in multiple sectors. The ₹1,400-crore project, funded by the World Bank, aims to improve the socio-economic conditions of rural tribal communities through a coordinated and multi-sectoral development approach.
Owned by the Tribal Welfare Department, TRESP is being implemented through seven line departments, covering key areas such as education, roads and communication, and livelihood generation. Under the project framework, education-related interventions are being carried out by the Secondary Education Department, while infrastructure development in roads and communication is executed by the Public Works Department (PWD). Livelihood promotion activities are jointly supported by the Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Husbandry Departments, along with the Tripura Rural Livelihood Mission (TRLM).
The Tribal Welfare Department functions as the nodal agency and oversees the overall execution of the project through a dedicated State Project Management Unit (PMU) operating under the “Society for TRESP”. This institutional mechanism ensures smooth coordination and timely flow of funds to the respective Project Implementing Units (PIUs).
As part of TRESP’s structured monitoring system, progress is reviewed on a quarterly basis in Executive Committee (EC) meetings chaired by the Secretary, Tribal Welfare Department. On February 9, Dr. K. Sashi Kumar, IFS, Secretary, Tribal Welfare, chaired an EC meeting to undertake a comprehensive review of the project’s implementation status. The review focused on sector-wise achievements, challenges faced at the ground level by PIUs, and measures required to further accelerate project delivery.
Senior officials from all seven line departments, along with representatives from support agencies including SIPARD and T-SAC, attended the meeting. The review noted encouraging progress across project components and stressed the need for stronger inter-departmental coordination, robust monitoring and feedback mechanisms, faster formation of producer groups, and expeditious channelisation of working capital to community institutions. The Secretary also expressed satisfaction over the Model Village Development Plan (VDP) initiative being implemented by SIPARD, terming it a crucial step towards integrated and participatory tribal development under TRESP.
