Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday announced that tea exports from the state have increased by 40 million kg in 2025-26, marking the strongest growth in 25 years. While tea exports in Southern India declined by 10 million kg, Assam saw a rise in sales by 19 million kg.
At the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre, the sale of orthodox tea doubled, rising from 4.19 million kg to 9.15 million kg. Highlighting recent trade agreements with the European Union, United Kingdom, and the United States, Sarma expressed confidence in a “golden era” for Assam tea.
The Chief Minister also said that the state government has decided to raise the subsidy on orthodox tea from Rs 10 to Rs 15 per kg to encourage further exports next year, leveraging the benefits of free trade agreements with these countries.
