Guwahati, Feb 11: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday said the Special Investigation Team (SIT) report on Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi’s alleged links with Pakistan will include new details, such as Gogoi’s unmentioned visit to Rawalpindi home to the Pakistan Army headquarters and his wife’s salary from Pakistan. The updated report will be forwarded to the Union Government soon.
Sarma described the matter as a “struggle to ensure Pakistan cannot enter Dispur” and clarified that it goes beyond electoral politics. He said the report, which investigates Pakistani national Ali Tauqeer Sheikh’s alleged interference in India’s internal affairs, will be sent to the Ministry of Home Affairs tomorrow or the next day.
The SIT probe focuses on Gogoi, his British wife Elizabeth Colburn, and Sheikh, with the Chief Minister citing Intelligence Bureau inputs suggesting a “deeper connection” and alleged transmission of information to Pakistan.
Gogoi dismissed the allegations as “mindless and bogus,” comparing them to a “super flop C-grade cinema.” Sarma defended not summoning Gogoi for questioning, saying police often obtain truths when targets feel cornered, referencing the Rawalpindi disclosure.
The Chief Minister predicted strong action from Union Home Minister Amit Shah and rejected claims that the probe is linked to the upcoming Assam Assembly elections. Sarma also alleged that Congress limited press access during Gogoi’s recent press conference and cited a whistleblower tip about a political consultancy group planning to target Gogoi and blame the BJP.
Responding to claims by Congress leader Pawan Khera regarding Sarma’s association with Bangladeshi cleric Dewan Mohammad Saidur Rahman Chishti Saidabadi, the CM noted that the cleric had also visited former CM Tarun Gogoi’s residence and met Gaurav Gogoi twice. Sarma added that he maintains past photos with maulanas as part of his engagement with Sufism and for transparency.
