Meghalaya participated for the first time at BIOFACH 2026 in Nuremberg, Germany, the world’s largest trade fair for organic food and agriculture, presenting its certified organic products to buyers from over 90 countries. India was recognised as Country of the Year at the event.
The state delegation was led by Dr. Vijay Kumar D, IAS, Commissioner and Secretary to the Government of Meghalaya and Chairman of MEGNOLIA (Meghalaya Natural and Organic Farming Society for Livelihood and Innovation in Agriculture). He outlined Meghalaya’s organic development roadmap, highlighting the state’s farmer-centric model, institutional support, sustainability, and market integration.
Meghalaya’s participation included farmer representatives, enabling them to directly engage with international buyers and understand global standards, certification, traceability, and value addition. Trinity Saioo, a turmeric farmer from Jaintia Hills, and Ringnang Kongkal Sangma, a black pepper farmer from Garo Hills, shared their experiences of learning international market expectations.
Under the State Organic Mission 2028, Meghalaya aims to bring one lakh hectares under certified organic cultivation. The mission supports cluster-based certification, Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), value addition, and structured market access.
At BIOFACH 2026, Meghalaya showcased certified organic turmeric, ginger, sticky rice, and processed pineapple products. Partners including Mother India, Plantrich, HIFEED, and IFOAM highlighted value-added products such as pineapple concentrate, purée, and freeze-dried pineapple, demonstrating the state’s shift from primary produce to export-ready products.
The state’s participation reflects Meghalaya’s commitment to integrating farmers into global organic value chains and strengthening its position as a source of high-quality organic products in international markets.
