Aizawl, Feb 18: The Mizoram government will hand over the Jordan Centre, a de-addiction facility in Kolasib district, to the Presbyterian Church, Social Welfare Minister Lalrinpuii announced in the assembly on Wednesday.
An agreement has been signed with the Synod, the church’s highest executive body, and the formal handover will take place soon. “The government is fully prepared and awaits the Synod’s final response. The Synod has already allocated Rs 2 crore in its budget for this,” Lalrinpuii stated while responding to opposition queries.
The Law and Judicial Department has vetted the agreement, and the file is currently under review by the Finance Department.
The minister also highlighted ongoing efforts to combat drug abuse in the state. Plans are underway for a major rehabilitation centre in Lunglen near Aizawl, to be managed by prominent Mizo preacher Fedrick and his team. “This facility will follow global standards, focusing on aftercare and skill development for residents,” she added.
Mizoram currently runs over 50 de-addiction and rehabilitation centres.
In other updates, Lalrinpuii reported that the state has transported 1,888 bodies from urban hospitals to victims’ native villages at a cost of Rs 1.97 crore. This initiative, a key ZPM election promise, aims to ease the financial burden previously borne by legislators. Last month, the government also launched an online platform to streamline these logistics and improve accessibility.
