Manipur Police on Wednesday arrested Sahid Shah (35) of Kairang Mayai Leikai, Imphal East district, a warder posted at Manipur Central Jail, for allegedly facilitating the unauthorized use of mobile phones by inmates, including those lodged under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
According to police sources, the warder was allowing prisoners to make and receive phone calls illegally from inside the jail premises. During the operation, multiple mobile phones and SIM cards were seized.
Preliminary investigation has revealed financial transactions carried out from within the jail by inmates through the UPI account of the arrested warder, indicating possible monetary gains in exchange for the illegal facilitation.
A case has been registered at Heingang Police Station in Imphal East district. Further investigation is underway to ascertain the full extent of the network and to identify other individuals connected with the case.
