Aizawl, Feb 23: The Centre has sanctioned ₹97 crore to transform Sairang railway station located 21 km from the capital into a world-class facility, Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma announced in the assembly on Monday.
Sairang, a terminal station on the Bhairabi-Sairang line inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi last September, now serves the state capital following its recent integration into the national rail network. Lalduhoma said the Ministry of Railways has approved Mizoram’s request for “World Class” status.
The upgrade will feature major structural enhancements, including vertical and horizontal expansions of the existing building, new terminal structures to handle rising passenger traffic, and extensive beautification of the premises and surroundings. A tender for the project has already been issued and opened, paving the way for immediate work.
The chief minister highlighted plans to position Sairang as a key logistics hub. Discussions with Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw are underway for a large warehouse, with a joint land inspection scheduled after initial availability concerns. “If secured, it will boost regional trade and local entrepreneurs,” Lalduhoma added.
This development follows the launch of the Sairang-Silchar service earlier this month and completes the 51.38 km Bhairabi-Sairang line, connecting Mizoram to the broader railway map.
