Union Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has approved the construction of 5,000 new houses in Manipur under the Pradhan Mantri Awaas Yojana – Gramin (PMAY-G) for the financial year 2025–26.
The decision was taken following a meeting with Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh at the Minister’s residence in New Delhi on Monday evening. The Chief Minister was accompanied by Deputy Chief Ministers Nemcha Kipgen and Losii Dikho.
The 5,000 houses have been sanctioned specifically for IDPs affected by the law-and-order crisis and ethnic violence in the state. During the meeting, Chouhan warmly received the Manipuri leaders and assured full support from the Centre in efforts to restore peace and normalcy in Manipur.
Earlier this month, the Manipur government had submitted a proposal seeking approval for a special PMAY-G project to rehabilitate displaced families whose homes were destroyed in the violence.
In addition to the housing sanction, the Union Ministry of Rural Development has approved a special window under the Awaas+ 2024 household survey to capture details of eligible affected families. The state government has been permitted to continue registering beneficiaries under the special PMAY-G project.
However, the Ministry has directed that beneficiary identification must strictly adhere to PMAY-G guidelines, and that details of eligible households be uploaded through the Awaas+ 2024 mobile application.
The houses will be constructed in accordance with the provisions of the Framework for Implementation (FFI) of PMAY-G. The Centre has also allowed the state to sanction houses for eligible beneficiaries who had earlier received one or more instalments under PMAY-G but whose homes were destroyed during the ethnic violence.
The move is expected to provide significant relief to thousands of displaced families and strengthen ongoing rehabilitation efforts in the state.
