Guwahati, Feb 24: Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, issued a stern condemnation on Tuesday regarding the alleged racial harassment of three women from Arunachal Pradesh in South Delhi’s Malviya Nagar. Terming the incident “profoundly shameful,” the Minister asserted that such prejudice against citizens from the Northeast will not be tolerated.
The confrontation occurred on the afternoon of February 20 at a residential complex in Malviya Nagar. The dispute reportedly began over minor electrical and drilling work being carried out in the victims’ fourth-floor rented flat. According to the police complaint, dust and debris from the drilling fell onto the floor below, leading to a confrontation with neighbors identified as Harsh Singh and his wife, Ruby Jain. What started as a civic grievance quickly escalated into verbal intimidation and racial slurs. A video of the incident has since gone viral on social media, triggering public outrage and drawing renewed attention to the discrimination faced by the Northeastern community in the national capital.
Minister Scindia took to the social media platform X to express his deep concern, stating that a minor residential issue escalating into abuse and intimidation rooted in prejudice is unacceptable. He confirmed that he has spoken directly with Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu and the Delhi Police Commissioner to ensure that the matter is handled with the highest priority. The Minister has formally sought immediate and strict action against the perpetrators to ensure such “injustice” is met with the full force of the law.
The Delhi Police have registered an FIR at the Malviya Nagar Police Station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The charges include provisions related to outraging the modesty of a woman and promoting enmity on grounds of religion or race.
