Silchar, Feb 25: A 28-year-old woman was allegedly gangraped in front of her boyfriend and robbed of Rs 10,000 by 7–8 men at the Silchar bypass in Cachar district on the night of February 19.
Cachar police have arrested one suspect, Nilutpol Das of Ashram Road, Silchar, and detained another, while a manhunt continues for the remaining perpetrators and the SUV reportedly used in the attack.
Cachar SSP Partha Protim Das told ANI that investigations are ongoing and confirmed that the accused arrived in an SUV, based on the victim’s statement. Additional SP Rajat Kumar Pal said the case, registered as No. 177/2026 at Silchar police station under Sections 308(5), 310(2), 351(2), 61(2), 70(1), 76, and 79 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, involves stopping, raping, and extorting the victim. A medical examination of the victim has been conducted, with the report awaited.
Police described the incident as a “sensational crime” and pledged to apprehend all involved.
TMC Rajya Sabha MP Sushmita Dev condemned the attack on X, stating: “The news of a gang rape in Silchar, Assam, is extremely disturbing. The @CMOfficeAssam is the Home Minister too. While @BJP4India politicises women’s security in other states, their own state is unsafe.”
