Guwahati, Feb 27: Garima Saikia Garg, wife of late Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, welcomed the Assam government’s move to seek a fast-track court from the Gauhati High Court for expediting the trial in her husband’s death case.

She stressed that the family, fans, and well-wishers demand the “most stringent punishment” for the accused. “We seek a water-tight trial and hope the judge treats this as a special case,” Garima told reporters. “No one who loved Zubeen will want any accused to get bail.”

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Thursday that the state Cabinet approved the request following the family’s plea, despite satisfaction with the current court proceedings.

Zubeen Garg died while swimming in Singapore’s sea on September 19, 2025, during the 4th North East India Festival. An Assam Police CID Special Investigation Team (SIT) probed the case, filing a charge-sheet in a local court against seven accused.Garima praised the SIT’s “flawless enquiry,” which identified the culprits. “The CM said it was planned long ago, and the SIT confirmed it. We just need it established in court hence our push for a special fast-track court,” she added.

The accused include NEIF chief organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, manager Siddharth Sharma, band members Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and Amrit Prabha Mahanta (facing murder charges), cousin and suspended DSP Sandipan Garg (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), and PSOs Nandeswar Bora and Prabin Baishya (criminal conspiracy and breach of trust).

Earlier, Garima and Special Public Prosecutor Ziaul Kamar had flagged the slow pace at Kamrup Metropolitan District and Sessions Court, where the trial is yet to begin. Sarma had alleged a “conspiracy” by a media group and Congress to switch judges and secure bail before elections.
