Guwahati, Mar 2: Assam Agriculture Minister Atul Bora flagged off the state’s first export of GI-tagged Karbi Anglong Ginger to London on Monday at a ceremony held at Krishi Bhawan, Khanapara.
Bora expressed delight over the milestone, praising the superior quality of ginger from Karbi Anglong’s hilly regions. “This is the first time that ginger is being exported. This ginger is from Karbi Anglong. Its quality is very good. We are exporting it to London. This is a matter of great happiness for us,” he said.
Vineeta Sudhanshu, General Manager of APEDA, noted that this marks the debut shipment of Assam ginger to London. “This is the first time that Karbi Anglong GI ginger is going from Assam to London. In January, we organised an international buyer-seller meet where international buyers came, and our exporters participated. We regularly do these buyer-seller meets, so it is a result of that. They liked our products there and showed interest in purchasing them,” she added. The trial consignment consists of 1.2 metric tonnes. Sudhanshu said further shipments would follow if the quality meets expectations.
This export is a major boost for Assam’s agriculture sector, especially Karbi Anglong farmers. The GI tag enhances the product’s authenticity and value in global markets, paving the way for expanded opportunities and higher incomes.
