Shillong, Mar 11: The situation in Meghalaya’s West Garo Hills district remained calm but tense on Wednesday, a day after two people were killed in police firing during clashes between tribal and non-tribal groups.

With no new incidents reported, authorities extended the curfew until midnight on March 13 and continued the suspension of mobile internet services. Additional security forces, including the Army, have been deployed to maintain order.

“The situation remains calm but tense,” an official said. Five Army columns are stationed in the district—three in Tura town and two in Chibinang, where Tuesday’s clashes occurred during the nomination process for the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections.

Superintendent of Police Abraham T. Sangma confirmed that the clashes erupted in Chibinang over the election nomination process. District Deputy Commissioner V. Aggarwal said the curfew has been extended until 12 am on March 13, with additional security measures including Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel and extra state police deployed at sensitive locations.

Regular patrolling continues across affected areas, and officials warned of strict action against anyone attempting to disrupt peace. The local administration is closely monitoring the situation to maintain stability.
