Silchar, March 11: A Class 9 student at a residential school in Assam’s Cachar district was found dead in the bathroom of his hostel on Wednesday, police said.

The deceased has been identified as Arindam Das, a resident of a village near Silchar. According to police, he was found hanging inside the hostel bathroom at Pailapool under Lakhipur Police Station.

Family members have alleged that ragging by fellow students led to the incident. The student’s brother, Ajay Das, claimed that Arindam took the step due to ragging at the school.

School principal Viswas Kumar said the matter will be investigated by the school’s anti-ragging committee along with the police and civil authorities. He stated that action would be taken if anyone is found responsible during the investigation.

The body has been sent to Silchar Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem examination.

Police said an investigation is underway.
