Agartala, March 13, 2026: The Tripura Legislative Assembly will elect its new Speaker on March 18, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath announced following an urgent meeting of the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) on Friday.

Nath explained that the decision was taken during discussions in the ongoing Budget session. He noted that Indrasena Reddy Nallu had already delivered his address on the opening day of the session.

Outlining the election process, Nath said the Speaker-in-charge will issue the official announcement on March 16. Nomination papers will be filed the next day, followed by scrutiny and withdrawal. “If there is only one nomination, the Speaker will be declared elected on March 18. In case of multiple nominations, voting will be conducted through ballot,” he clarified.

The minister also revealed that the Assembly’s legislative agenda has been expanded. Seven new bills have been added to the session, in addition to the three originally proposed. These include: Tripura Lift and Escalators Bill, Tripura Guaranteed Services to Citizens Bill, Tripura Ease of Doing Business 2026 Bill, MBB University Amendment Bill, Science, Technology and Allied Skill University Bill, Atal Vihar Bajpayee Skill University Bill, and International University Bill.

Nath said the BAC meeting, convened by the Speaker-in-charge, agreed to incorporate the additional bills, thereby broadening the scope of the Budget session.
