Agartala, March 14, 2026: Milk production in Tripura has recorded a steady rise over the past five years, reflecting gradual growth in the state’s dairy sector.

According to official estimates, Tripura produced 206.17 thousand tonnes of milk in 2020–21, which increased to 216.96 thousand tonnes in 2021–22 and 230.12 thousand tonnes in 2022–23. Production continued to grow to 247.30 thousand tonnes in 2023–24 and further reached 263.69 thousand tonnes in 2024–25.

Data on milk consumption also indicates a rising trend in the state. The estimated monthly per capita milk consumption (per person per 30 days) in 2022–23 stood at 1.469 units in rural areas and 1.724 units in urban areas. In 2023–24, consumption increased to 1.564 units in rural areas and 1.987 units in urban areas, suggesting higher demand in both regions.

At the national level, milk production in India has also shown consistent growth. The country produced 210 million tonnes of milk in 2020–21, rising to 222 million tonnes in 2021–22, 231 million tonnes in 2022–23, 239 million tonnes in 2023–24, and reaching 248 million tonnes in 2024–25.

According to the estimated monthly per capita consumption of milk (litres per person per 30 days), rural consumption in the country increased slightly from 4.932 litres in 2022–23 to 5.085 litres in 2023–24. In urban areas, consumption remained almost stable at 5.694 litres in 2022–23 and 5.686 litres in 2023–24.

The data is based on the National Sample Survey Office Household Consumption Expenditure Survey.

Meanwhile, data from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India shows that milk samples collected in Tripura for enforcement analysis have increased over the years. A total of 31 samples were analysed in 2021–22, 31 in 2022–23, 87 in 2023–24, 123 in 2024–25, and 220 in 2025–26.

The reports for 2021–22 and 2023–24 found no non-conforming samples, with no cases of unsafe milk, substandard quality, or labelling defects detected.

However, in 2022–23, eight samples were found to be non-conforming, including two unsafe samples, five of substandard quality, and one with labelling defects or misleading claims. In 2024–25, five samples were non-conforming, including one unsafe sample and four of substandard quality.

In 2025–26, nine samples were reported to be non-conforming, including one unsafe sample and eight of substandard quality.

Despite these findings, no civil or criminal cases were reported in connection with milk quality violations in the state during the period, and no convictions, penalties, or fines were recorded under enforcement actions for milk samples in Tripura between 2021–22 and 2025–26.

This information was given by Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh alias Lalan Singh in the Lok Sabha in response to a question asked by MP Anil Yeshwant Desai.
