A large number of people staged a protest demonstration on Sunday demanding immediate steps to preserve the historic Koirengei Airfield, warning that ongoing permanent construction at the site could erase an important chapter of history linked to World War II.
The protest was organised by the Campaign for Protection and Preservation of Koirengei Airfield (CPPKAF), which called for an immediate halt to all construction activities at the airfield. Demonstrators asserted that the site served as a crucial base for Allied forces during the decisive battles fought in Manipur in 1944 and should be protected as a heritage landmark.
Speaking to reporters, CPPKAF convenor Shanta Nahakpam said the Koirengei Airfield is not only a matter of pride for Manipur but also a site of national importance. He stated that the airfield played a critical role during the war and remains a place where world history unfolded.
He cautioned that once historical sites are damaged, the loss is irreversible. “History cannot be rebuilt once it is destroyed,” he said, urging authorities to intervene before the heritage value of the airfield is permanently compromised.
Nahakpam further informed that the committee has already approached the office of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Rajya Sainik Board, highlighting the historical significance of the airfield which was used by Allied forces during the intense fighting in Manipur in 1944.
The protesters demanded that the site be preserved in its original form and developed as a heritage and tourism destination, stating that protecting the airfield would honour the legacy of the Indian Armed Forces and the sacrifices made during the war.
They reiterated that all construction activities at the airfield must be halted immediately to safeguard the historic site for future generations.
