Gangtok, Mar 16: A strong thunderstorm struck Sikkim on Sunday evening, causing multiple transmission line failures and leaving several areas without electricity, the state power department reported.
In Pakyong district, a conductor on the 66 kV Rorathang-Rongli line snapped near Amba, cutting power to Rongli and Rhenock.
Gangtok district experienced sparks and loud noises near Namli on the 66 kV Marchak-Macleods line, disrupting electricity to Nimtar, Topakhani, Singtam, and the Khamdong area. Additionally, the 66 kV LLHP-Sichey line failed during trial charging.
In Mangan district, heavy sparks were reported near the G B Pant Wildlife Sanctuary on the 66 kV Perbing-Phodong line, causing a blackout across the district.
Power department teams are patrolling the affected lines and working on urgent repairs. Temporary outages may continue in other areas, but authorities expect normal supply to be restored soon.
