Aizawl, Mar 17: The Mizoram Legislative Assembly concluded its 28-day Budget session on Monday, passing 10 government Bills, including legislation banning polygamy and strengthening women’s property rights.
The session, which began on February 17, also saw the approval of the state’s 2026-27 Budget of Rs 17,469.91 crore and supplementary grants of Rs 3,724.25 crore for 2025-26.
Key legislation passed included The Mizo Marriage and Inheritance of Property (Amendment) Bill, 2026, aimed at prohibiting polygamy and enhancing women’s inheritance rights; The Mizoram (Prevention of Public Land Encroachment) Bill, 2026; and The Mizoram State University (Amendment) Bill, 2026, which relocates the proposed university from Aizawl to Lunglei.
During the session, the House addressed 1,248 starred questions (1,231 admitted, 27 rejected, seven withdrawn, 300 listed) and 396 unstarred questions (376 admitted, 17 rejected, three withdrawn). Lawmakers also unanimously adopted a resolution urging the inclusion of the Mizo language in the Constitution’s Eighth Schedule.
Speaker Lalbiakzama noted the cordial atmosphere and decorum maintained throughout the proceedings and announced the sine die adjournment of the session.
