Guwahati, Mar 18: United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) President Pramod Boro on Tuesday reaffirmed the party’s focus on the overall development, rights protection, and socio-economic progress of the 26 communities in the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) region ahead of the Assam Assembly elections.
Boro, who will contest from the 43 No. Tamulpur (ST) constituency, announced that UPPL will field candidates in 15 seats in line with public expectations and party decisions. “The UPPL has always prioritized the development of the region and will continue these efforts. We remain committed to holistic growth, safeguarding rights, and enhancing socio-economic conditions for BTC communities,” he told reporters.
The party released its first list of candidates for the polls scheduled on April 9. Boro, recently elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha as a National Democratic Alliance (NDA) nominee, leads the list. Other candidates include Aninda Basumatary (1 No. Gossaigaon), Raju Kumar Narzary (2 No. Dotma ST), Lawrence Islary (3 No. Kokrajhar ST), Nerswn Boro (45 No. Bhergaon), Dipen Boro (46 No. Udalguri ST), and Kamalsingh Narzary (20 No. Bijni).
The official notification was issued by UPPL General Secretary (Administration) Raju Kumar Narzary following approval from the Central Working Committee on Core Committee recommendations.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) last Sunday announced the schedule for assembly elections in Assam, West Bengal, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry. Assam and Kerala will vote on April 9, West Bengal in two phases on April 23 and 29, Tamil Nadu on April 23, and Puducherry on April 9. Counting of votes across all states is scheduled for May 4.
