Agartala, March 18, 2026: A significant employment pattern in Tripura has come under scrutiny following a reply in the Tripura Legislative Assembly, raising serious concerns among unemployed youth across the state.
The issue surfaced through an unstarred question raised by MLA Sudip Sarkar, highlighting the government’s approach toward employment. In response, Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy on Tuesday disclosed that the state has been increasingly relying on re-employment of existing or retired personnel rather than creating fresh job opportunities.
According to the official data presented in the House, a total of 90 individuals were re-employed in the financial year 2023–24, followed by 84 in 2024–25, and 49 in 2025–26 across various government departments.
The reply further revealed the frequency of such engagements. In 2023–24, 71 individuals were re-employed once, 18 twice, and one individual was re-appointed as many as four times. Similarly, in 2024–25, 58 individuals received re-employment once, while 26 were engaged twice.
The figures point to a consistent administrative pattern where previously employed personnel are being repeatedly engaged, instead of opening avenues for new entrants into government service.
The development has drawn criticism from various quarters, with many arguing that the practice undermines employment generation in the state. Concerns have been raised that thousands of educated unemployed youth in Tripura are being deprived of fair opportunities.
