Guwahati, Mar 18: In a significant political shift ahead of the Assam Assembly elections, Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi resigned from the party and joined the BJP on Wednesday in the presence of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and state BJP president Dilip Saikia.

Bordoloi accused Congress leadership of sidelining him, citing “multiple issues” beyond ticket denial for the polls. “For me, getting a ticket was not a question of life and death. What was important was to hold my head high,” he told media after confirming his BJP switch. In his second Lok Sabha term with three years left, he chose to leave rather than endure what he called humiliation.

Navajyoti Talukdar, who quit as APCC vice-president on Tuesday, predicted the move and praised Sarma as a “dynamic leader.” Congress has fielded Bordoloi’s son from Margherita constituency in response. The resignation follows former Assam Congress chief Bhupen Kumar Borah’s defection to BJP a month ago after three decades in the party.

Assam goes to polls on April 9 for all 126 seats, with results on May 4. The BJP-led NDA eyes a third term under Sarma, while Congress seeks a comeback.
