A new cafe managed by local Monpa women was inaugurated at Zemithang in Arunachal Pradesh on Thursday, aimed at promoting community development and sustainable tourism in remote border areas.
The Border Brew Cafe is located on a decommissioned Bailey bridge over the Nyamjang Chu river, marking a unique initiative in Northeast India by combining heritage infrastructure with modern utility and tourism potential.
The project was developed to provide livelihood opportunities for local residents and encourage community engagement. It is expected to serve as a popular stop for tourists, travelers, and visitors in the region.
Constructed by the Indian Army in 31 days under Operation Sadbhavna, the initiative reflects the operation’s objectives of fostering goodwill, enhancing civil-military relations, and supporting socio-economic development in border communities.
Lt Gen RC Tiwari, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Eastern Command, commended the Gajraj Corps for the execution of the project.
The Tawang district public relations office noted on X: “A first in Northeast India, Border Brew Cafe at Zemithang — an inspiring initiative by the @adgpi under OpSadbhavna — is now OPEN. Built on a decommissioned Bailey bridge over the Nyamjang Chu. Empowering Monpa communities and boosting local livelihoods.”
