Guwahati, Mar 20: The Congress party has entered into an alliance with Raijor Dal to contest the upcoming Assam Assembly elections, with party leader Gaurav Gogoi stating that the partnership aims to “build a new Assam.”
The agreement was announced by Assam Congress President Gaurav Gogoi and Raijor Dal chief Akhil Gogoi during a joint press conference on Thursday, following weeks of negotiations.
“Everyone has made sacrifices to form this alliance,” Gaurav Gogoi said. “This time, Congress, Raijor Dal, Assam Jatiya Parishad, CPI(M), and CPI(ML) have come together despite many candidates stepping aside. I appeal to all other parties to join us in bidding farewell to the Himanta Biswa Sarma government.”
He added that the alliance will focus on “development for all” and “land rights for all.”
The 126-seat Assam Assembly elections are scheduled for April 9, with results to be declared on May 4. In the previous 2021 elections, the BJP-led NDA, including AGP and UPPL, won 75 seats—BJP alone securing 60—while Congress and its allies won 16 seats. Voter turnout in 2021 was recorded at 86.2% among over 2.2 crore registered voters.
