Guwahati, March 25: Gaurav Gogoi, Assam Congress president and MP from Jorhat, on Wednesday rejected allegations made by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma linking him and his wife to Pakistan’s ISI, describing them as a “wild theory” with no factual basis.

Speaking to PTI, Gogoi said the claims exist “only in his head” and alleged that such statements reflect an attempt to politicize issues related to national security.

Gogoi contrasted the allegations against him with the Congress party’s accusations against the Chief Minister, stating that their claims regarding the CM’s family, wealth, and alleged benefits to his wife’s company are supported by “published reports, court cases, and public evidence,” while calling the accusations against him “fiction.”

He also urged the Chief Minister to maintain seriousness on matters of national security, referring to an ongoing SIT probe into the allegations. Gogoi said he and his family have responded to multiple queries, and questioned the use of public funds in relation to the Chief Minister’s wife’s business.

The Congress leader further alleged that criticism of the government leads to punitive actions, including legal measures or exclusion from welfare schemes.

Commenting on the upcoming Assembly elections, Gogoi expressed confidence about electoral prospects, stating that voters would respond to what he described as “moral courage.” He also referred to the tenure of his father, former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, citing improvements in law and order and state finances during that period.

On the formation of a six-party opposition alliance comprising Congress, Raijor Dal, Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), CPI(M), APHLC, and CPI(ML), Gogoi said discussions on seat-sharing had taken time but expressed satisfaction over the coalition, describing it as a combination of national, regional, and Left-oriented parties.
