Guwahati, Mar 25: Election authorities have declared the nomination papers of 776 candidates valid across 124 of the 126 Assembly constituencies in Assam after completion of scrutiny, officials said on Tuesday.
A total of 815 candidates had submitted 1,389 nomination papers for the 2026 Legislative Assembly elections, according to the Joint Chief Electoral Officer. Scrutiny has been completed for 124 constituencies, while the process for Barpeta (SC) and Dhekiajuli constituencies has been deferred until 11 a.m. on March 25.
The last date for withdrawal of nominations is March 26 till 3 p.m. Polling for all 126 constituencies will be held in a single phase on April 9, with counting of votes scheduled for May 4.
Gaurav Gogoi, President of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, filed his nomination from the Jorhat constituency (No. 100) as a candidate of the Indian National Congress, with support from alliance partners. He paid tributes to his father, former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, before filing his nomination.
The election will see the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance, led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, contesting against the Congress for the 126-member Assembly.
