Suspected armed Kuki militants opened fire late on March 25, 2026, targeting an Indian Army post at Phougakchao Awang Leikai from the general area of Phouljang/Gothol.
Official sources said the firing began around 11:40 PM, triggering a swift retaliation by personnel of the Indian Army and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), including the 58th Battalion. The exchange of fire continued for nearly 30 minutes.
Following the incident, a joint operation was launched in the early hours of March 26 by the Indian Army, CRPF, Manipur Police, and the Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB). The operation is currently underway in the affected area and adjoining hill regions to trace those involved.
Security forces said the situation is under close watch and operations will continue to ensure stability in the region.
