Agartala, March 27, 2026: A youth was detained by police in Tripura’s Sonamura under Sepahijala district after allegedly being found in possession of counterfeit currency, triggering concern across the locality.
The detained individual has been identified as Amir Hossain Khandakar, reportedly the brother of a member of the Baddowal Panchayat. The incident took place near the Sonamura Bridge intersection in Sepahijala district.
According to local sources, Amir allegedly attempted to use counterfeit notes while purchasing goods at a local shop. Suspicion arose when shop staff checked the currency using a verification machine and found the notes to be fake. The matter was immediately reported to the police.
Police soon arrived at the spot, detained the youth, and brought him to Sonamura police station for questioning. Preliminary reports suggest that counterfeit currency amounting to around Rs 8,000 was recovered from his possession.
During interrogation, Amir reportedly failed to provide a satisfactory explanation regarding the source of the counterfeit notes.
The incident has created considerable stir in the area, with residents expressing concern over the circulation of fake currency in the locality.
