Guwahati, March 28: Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge will arrive in Lakhimpur on Sunday to officially release the party’s manifesto for the upcoming April 9 Assam Assembly elections.

AICC General Secretary in-charge of Assam, Jitendra Singh, confirmed the visit during a press conference, noting that the document is the result of months of grassroots outreach and consultations with citizens across the state. Singh emphasized that the manifesto reflects the genuine concerns and voices of the people of Assam gathered through extensive field visits by party members.

The announcement comes amid escalating political rhetoric between the Congress and the ruling BJP. During his address, Singh leveled serious allegations against the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led government, accusing it of creating an atmosphere of fear. He claimed that citizens face immediate police action for social media posts critical of the government and that media outlets exposing corruption are being intimidated.

Singh further took a swipe at the Chief Minister, suggesting that the BJP in Assam is now internally divided between a “Himanta Biswa Sarma faction” and the “original” BJP, while claiming that veteran leaders like Sarbananda Sonowal have been sidelined.

As the state prepares for polling on April 9, the Congress is positioning this manifesto as its primary roadmap to return to power after a decade-long hiatus. With the counting of votes scheduled for May 4, the party is intensifying its campaign efforts across the 126-member assembly.
