Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Tuesday launched Mission 1000 Days, a programme focused on the first 1,000 days of a child’s life, aimed at improving growth, development, and nutrition.

Sangma said reducing maternal mortality had been a priority since he assumed office in 2018, and targeted efforts had led to a nearly 50% decline in maternal deaths.

The state government has allocated ₹127 crore for Mission 1000 Days to provide additional nutrition, awareness campaigns, training for frontline workers, and mother-and-baby kits. The initiative also emphasizes community participation to support mothers and children.

The Chief Minister welcomed the involvement of community leaders, faith-based organizations, and civil society, stating the programme should evolve into a “people’s movement” to combat malnutrition and promote a healthier start for children.
