The Singapore Police Force (SPF) has officially closed its investigation into the death of Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, confirming there was no foul play and attributing the incident to accidental drowning linked to high alcohol consumption.

Garg, 51, died on September 19, 2025, during a private yacht trip off Lazarus Island. According to the SPF statement released Wednesday, he initially entered the water wearing a life jacket but removed it before returning to the yacht. He later swam alone a second time without a life jacket, despite offers of assistance from others on board, and became unresponsive while trying to return.

The yacht’s captain and crew rescued him and administered CPR. Police and paramedics transported him to Singapore General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Post-mortem toxicology showed a blood ethanol concentration of 333 mg/100 ml, indicating severe intoxication and impaired coordination. Other substances found were consistent with his known medical conditions, including epilepsy and hypertension.

The findings, submitted under the Coroners Act 2010, were reviewed in a Coroner’s Inquiry on March 25. The State Coroner ruled the death accidental, in line with police conclusions after reviewing witness statements and evidence. SPF urged the public to refrain from speculation.

Garg had been in Singapore for a cultural event and was scheduled to perform the following day. Separately, in Assam, a murder investigation linked to Garg continues. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma described it as a “plain and simple murder,” leading to the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT). The SIT visited Singapore in October 2025 and filed a 1,200-page chargesheet in December against seven suspects. Last month, the Gauhati High Court appointed Judge Sharmila Bhuyan to oversee fast-track trials, which began on March 30.
