Agartala, April 04, 2026: A tragic incident in Tripura’s Teliamura subdivision has triggered widespread unrest after a 70-year-old woman was killed in a wild elephant attack late Friday night.

The incident took place around 2 AM in the Jumbari area of Ramkrishnapur ADC Village under Mungiakami Police Station. The victim identified as Monimala Debbarma was reportedly attacked by a wild tusker inside her home leading to her death on the spot.

The incident sparked immediate outrage among local residents. This morning, agitated villagers and family members staged a blockade on the Assam–Agartala National Highway at Mungiyakami bazar placing the body on the road and halting vehicular movement for hours.

Sub-Divisional Forest Officer Dhiren Koloi reached the spot to assess the situation, but was allegedly mobbed by angry protesters upon being identified. Tension escalated rapidly before local leaders of the Tipra Motha party intervened and escorted the officer to safety.

In a further escalation, a group of miscreants reportedly vandalized the local Forest Beat Office. The situation turned more volatile when two journalists Hiranmoy Roy and Naren Chakraborty were attacked while covering the incident. Chakraborty was allegedly beaten with sticks, raising serious concerns over the safety of media personnel.

A heavy police presence has since been deployed in the area to restore order. Sub-Divisional Magistrate Apurba Krishna Chakraborty also reached the site and is currently engaged in discussions with protestors to defuse tensions.

The incident taking place just ahead of the ADC elections has taken a political turn. Tipra Motha’s candidate Utpal Debbarma visited the spot along with party supporters, expressing solidarity with the victim’s family fueling political debate in the region.

Reportedly, the highway blockade continues and the situation in Mungiakami remains tense. Authorities are closely monitoring developments as concerns grow over the possible impact of the incident on the upcoming Autonomous District Council elections.
