Guwahati, April 4: BJP national general secretary Nitin Nabin on Saturday launched a sharp attack on the Congress, accusing it of betraying the people of the Northeast and indulging in vote-bank politics. Addressing election rallies in Cachar and Sribhumi districts, Nabin asserted that it was the BJP-led governments that had “bridged the gap” between the region and the rest of the country.

He alleged that successive Congress governments had turned Assam’s Barak Valley into a “crime hub” through appeasement politics. “For 70 years, they betrayed the people of the northeast and played with their sentiments,” Nabin said while canvassing for BJP’s Lakhipur candidate.

Highlighting the transformation under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said development had reached every corner of the region. “Earlier, when people from the Northeast visited Delhi, they said they were going to India. But now, the entire India is visible in every nook and corner of the Northeast,” he remarked.

Nabin pointed to the Jan Dhan Yojana as one of the Modi government’s biggest achievements, ensuring that benefits of welfare schemes reached marginalized sections directly. He maintained that the BJP was contesting elections not for power but to bring change in people’s lives, expressing confidence that the party would secure a third consecutive term in Assam.

At another rally in Sribhumi, Nabin reiterated that Congress governments had discriminated against Barak Valley, making travel from Guwahati to the region an ordeal. “Once known for violence and unrest, the state is now known for development and hope,” he said, adding that crime had been checked under the BJP-led government.

He praised Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s tough stance on law and order, saying, “No criminal dares to trouble the people anymore as they know that the chief minister will not spare anyone.”

Nabin’s campaign pitch centered on contrasting the BJP’s “vision of development” with what he described as Congress’s “appeasement politics,” while appealing to voters to back the party’s candidates in the upcoming polls.
