Guwahati, April 6: Just days before Assam heads to the polls, Congress media chief Pawan Khera has levelled fresh allegations against Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, accusing them of financial irregularities and violations of citizenship laws.

At a press conference in New Delhi on Sunday, Khera claimed that Sarma had amassed ₹52,000 crore through undisclosed means, allegedly hidden in shell companies abroad. He further alleged that Riniki Bhuyan Sharma holds three passports from the United Arab Emirates, Antigua-Barbuda and Egypt and owns properties in Dubai that were not declared in Sarma’s election affidavit.

The Assam CM has strongly rejected the charges, calling them “false allegations” and a “poorly executed attempt at digital manipulation.” He announced that he and his wife will file civil and criminal defamation cases against Khera within 48 hours.

Sarma pointed to what he described as “serious discrepancies” in the documents circulated by Congress, including mismatched surnames, invalid QR codes, and inconsistencies in passport details. “Truth will prevail. Those spreading misinformation will be held accountable,” he wrote on X.

Riniki Bhuyan Sharma also dismissed the claims, stating that criminal charges are being initiated and the matter will be pursued in court.

Meanwhile, Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi backed Khera’s allegations, calling them “grave and criminal offences” and demanding further investigation.

Polling for the 126-member Assam assembly is scheduled for April 9, with results to be declared on May 4.
