Guwahati, April 6: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday accused the Congress of fabricating allegations against his wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, by using false information sourced from a Pakistani social media group.

At a press conference, Sarma claimed that the documents circulated by Congress leaders Pawan Khera and Gaurav Gogoi, alleging his wife held multiple passports and undisclosed properties in Dubai were derived from a group called Pakistanis in Ajman. He alleged that her photo was morphed onto a lost passport belonging to a Pakistani national.

“I am concerned that they took the help of Pakistan. This is not a simple fraud case but a crime against the nation,” Sarma said, adding that Pakistan was attempting to influence the Assam elections. He pointed to the narrative of several TV talk shows, which he claimed were tilted in favor of Congress.

The Chief Minister said his wife has filed a complaint against Khera, and expressed confidence that police would take legal action. He described the timing of the allegations, just days before the April 9 polls, as an attempt to influence results a “criminal offence punishable under the law.”

Sarma also criticized Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi, son of former Assam CM Tarun Gogoi, saying it was “unfortunate” that he had “stooped so low” by making false allegations.

On Sunday, Khera had alleged that Riniki Bhuyan Sharma holds three passports from the UAE, Egypt and Antigua-Barbuda and owns two Dubai properties not disclosed in Sarma’s election affidavit.
