The United Naga Council (UNC) has sought the intervention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to address the issue of illegal immigration in Manipur and other Northeastern states.
In a memorandum, the UNC expressed serious concern over the alleged influx of illegal immigrants and urged the Centre to take immediate and effective steps to identify and deport them.
While acknowledging the Prime Minister’s strong stance on the issue during his visits to Assam, the council raised concern over what it described as a lack of similar emphasis during visits to other Northeastern states, particularly Manipur.
The memorandum was signed by UNC President Ng Lorho and General Secretary Vareiyo Shatsang.
The UNC stressed the need for a uniform approach across the region, stating that unchecked immigration could disrupt the demographic balance and threaten the identity and rights of indigenous communities.
It further noted that the issue has significant demographic, social, and economic implications for Manipur and the wider Northeast. The council warned that it could also impact key processes such as the census and delimitation, potentially altering political representation for indigenous populations.
The memorandum also called on the Centre to extend necessary support and relief to affected communities.
It recommended measures such as updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and setting up a population commission to address the issue through legal mechanisms.
Emphasising the need for consistency, the UNC urged the government to adopt a uniform policy framework to safeguard the interests of native and indigenous peoples and to effectively tackle illegal immigration in the region.
