Agartala, April 06, 2026: TIPRA Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma on Monday criticised the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for allegedly ignoring key indigenous issues in its poll manifesto ahead of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council elections.

Addressing an election rally in Ampi under Gomati district in support of Tipra Motha candidate Kamal Koloi, Debbarma said the BJP manifesto did not mention rights of indigenous people, land rights, direct funding, or a script for the Kokborok language.

He also alleged inconsistency in the BJP’s stand on the script issue, claiming that the party, which has opposed the use of Roman script for Kokborok, published its manifesto in the same script.

“Despite publishing their poll promises, they have not spoken about indigenous rights, land, or script. They have even removed the term ‘Janajati’ and indicated that the word ‘tribal’ may be dropped from the council’s name if they come to power. I will not compromise,” Debbarma said.

He further accused the BJP of taking contradictory positions on various communities and issues, and claimed that indigenous people in Tripura were being sidelined.

Calling for unity among indigenous communities, the Tipra Motha founder said political divisions would weaken their collective strength. “When there is unity, we will have the strength to rule. Without unity, nothing can be achieved,” he said, urging people not to engage in infighting.

Debbarma also appealed to voters to prioritise long-term rights and development over short-term gains. He asked them to choose between “money for today” and a better future for the next generation.

Taking a dig at the state government led by Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha, he questioned the condition of roads, drinking water supply and education in tribal areas, alleging inadequate development despite significant expenditure.
