Guwahati, April 6: The Congress on Monday filed a complaint with the Election Commission of India (ECI), demanding the cancellation of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s candidature, alleging that he failed to disclose his wife’s alleged offshore assets in his poll affidavit.
The complaint, submitted by Sarma’s opponent in Jalukbari constituency, Bidisha Neog, to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, also sought an inquiry into what it termed “suppression of information.” Neog alleged that documents from the Dubai Land Department showed Riniki Bhuyan Sharma, Sarma’s wife, as the owner of two properties in Al Barsha South Fourth, Dubai.
“The deliberate non-disclosure violates mandatory requirements and renders the nomination liable to rejection,” Neog said, urging the ECI to reject Sarma’s nomination under Section 36 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951, and initiate proceedings under Section 125A.
The Congress also filed a complaint with the Enforcement Directorate, demanding a probe under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act into alleged undisclosed assets in Dubai and Wyoming, USA.
On Sunday, Congress media chief Pawan Khera alleged that Riniki Bhuyan Sharma holds three foreign passports from the UAE, Egypt and Antigua-Barbuda along with overseas properties and shell company assets.
Sarma refuted the charges on Monday, claiming the opposition had concocted the allegations using false information from a Pakistani social media group. Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi responded by challenging Sarma to deny the claims under oath on the Bhagavad Gita.
