Guwahati, April 7: Amidst the high-stakes final push for the Assam Assembly elections, state Congress chief Gaurav Gogoi on Tuesday leveled a serious allegation against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), claiming that party workers from other states have been mobilized to influence the upcoming vote.
During a roadshow in Jorhat, where he is making his debut as an Assembly candidate, Gogoi alleged that hundreds of individuals from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar have entered Assam. He further claimed that their names have been surreptitiously added to the local electoral rolls to allow them to participate in the voting process scheduled for this Thursday, April 9.
“Will we tolerate this? Will they decide our political future?” Gogoi questioned while addressing reporters. He also targeted the state law enforcement agencies, criticizing the police for allowing “hordes” of outsiders to enter the state without proper verification or security checks.
The Congress leader’s concerns were echoed by Mira Borthakur Goswami, the party’s candidate for Dispur and president of the state women’s wing. In a widely shared social media post, Goswami alleged that buses from Bihar were filling the roads and urged “every conscious citizen” to remain vigilant at polling centers to prevent potential electoral malpractices.
These allegations come on the back of a contentious special revision of the electoral rolls. The final list, published on February 10, showed a total of 2.49 crore voters, a 0.97 per cent decrease from the initial draft a figure that has remained a point of debate for the opposition alliance.
As the state prepares for its first-ever single-phase Assembly election, the Congress is positioning itself as a defender of indigenous interests, accusing the BJP-led NDA of compromising local resources. With the campaign now officially closed, the focus shifts to the 126 constituencies where voters will decide if the Congress can return to power after a decade in the opposition.
