Agartala, April 08, 2026: Tension flared ahead of the upcoming ADC elections after a group of BJP supporters was allegedly attacked while on their way to attend a rally led by the Chief Minister in Teliamura, officials and party leaders said on Tuesday.
According to BJP worker Rathindra Debbarma, supporters from R.S. Para in Kalyanpur and adjoining areas were proceeding towards Duskhi Bazar for the rally when they were intercepted at Merung Bazar under Kalyanpur Police Station limits by suspected supporters of the opposition Motha party.
Debbarma alleged that the attackers fired two rounds of bullets and hurled a grenade, which did not explode, averting major casualties. He claimed that at least 10 to 15 people sustained injuries in the incident, while several vehicles were vandalised.
The incident triggered panic in the area, with eyewitnesses reporting chaotic scenes as people rushed to take cover. Despite the attack, some BJP supporters continued towards the rally venue.
Police later brought the situation under control and stepped up security in the area, officials said.
Addressing a separate election rally in Duskhi, the Chief Minister condemned the attack and appealed to voters to support the BJP, alleging that such incidents reflected the “negative mindset” of the opposition.
Meanwhile, political observers expressed concern over the rising incidents of violence ahead of the ADC polls, warning that the situation could escalate further if preventive measures are not strengthened.
