Agartala, April 30, 2026: A special one-day sitting of the Tripura Legislative Assembly commenced on Thursday focusing on advancing measures to protect and strengthen the constitutional rights of women across the country.
At the outset, Speaker Rampada Jamatia opened the proceedings by reading obituary references for former minister Kartik Kanya Debbarma and legendary playback singer Asha Bhosle.
During the session, Government Chief Whip Kalyani Saha Roy introduced a motion emphasizing the need for broader political consensus to secure women’s rights at the national level. The proposal urges all parliamentary parties to unite on the issue and calls upon the Centre to expedite delimitation based on the 2011 Census.
It further presses for renewed momentum to pass the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, popularly known as the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, which seeks to provide one-third reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies.
The session was convened by the Speaker following a requisition signed by 17 legislators, including Chief Whip Kalyani Saha Roy, underscoring the urgency of the issue.
