Conrad Sangma on Friday announced a series of welfare initiatives for construction workers in Meghalaya to mark International Workers’ Day.
According to the Chief Minister, the initiatives aim to support workers engaged in the construction sector and improve access to social security, employment opportunities, and education.
The measures include the launch of “CM LIGHT,” which provides ₹5,000 as direct benefit support to eligible workers. A Startup Toolkit Support Scheme has also been introduced to provide tools to skilled workers to enable self-employment.
Under the “ENABLE” programme, provisions have been made to improve access to education for workers’ children, including reserved seats and full fee waivers. The “BUILD” initiative focuses on investment in community infrastructure in areas with a high concentration of workers.
In addition, a Digital Labour Chowk App has been launched as a platform for workers to access government schemes and job opportunities.
The state government has also announced the extension of central social security schemes, including Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maandhan, Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana, and Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana, with the premiums to be borne by the concerned board.
Officials stated that the initiatives are intended to enhance welfare measures and expand support systems for construction workers and their families in the state.
