Guwahati, May 12: Himanta Biswa Sarma was sworn in as Chief Minister of Assam for a second term on Tuesday, marking the third consecutive government led by the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in the state. The oath-taking ceremony, held at the Veterinary College ground in Khanapara, was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, BJP President Nitin Nabin, senior Union ministers, and leaders from several NDA-ruled states.
Prime Minister Modi congratulated Sarma, describing the occasion as “a great day for Assam.” In a post on X, he lauded Sarma’s record as an administrator and wished him success in the new term. Modi also extended his best wishes to ministers Rameswar Teli, Atul Bora of the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), Charan Boro of the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), and Ajanta Neog, who were sworn in alongside Sarma. Former minister and senior BJP leader Ranjeet Kumar Dass has been named the NDA’s candidate for Speaker of the Assam Assembly.
The BJP-led alliance secured a commanding three-fourths majority in the 2026 Assembly elections, winning 102 of the 126 seats, with the AGP and BPF contributing 10 seats each. Sarma retained his constituency by a margin of over 80,000 votes, reinforcing his position as the BJP’s tallest leader in Assam. In his victory speech, Sarma credited the “double-engine government” under Prime Minister Modi for driving Assam’s transformation over the past decade.
