Aizawl, May 16: Chief Minister Lalduhoma attended the Ginger Festival at Samthang Community Hall in Khawzawl district on Saturday, where he Emphasized the importance of promoting organic ginger cultivation and strengthening processing and value addition in Mizoram. He noted that the government is steadily preparing to advance these initiatives.
Addressing the gathering, Lalduhoma emphasised the distinctive qualities of Mizoram ginger, describing it as rich in essential oils, low in fibre, and suitable for medicinal use. He announced that the Ministry of DoNER has approved the “Mizoram Ginger USP Sustainable Cultivation & Value Chain Development Project” valued at around Rs. 190 crore, with Rs. 30.13 crore already sanctioned for establishing processing units. The main unit will be set up at Mualkawi in Champhai district, supported by facilities at Tualcheng, Vaphai, and Zotlang, ensuring benefits for farmers across the region.
The Chief Minister stressed that sustainable and organic farming practices are vital for improving market prospects while safeguarding soil health. He emphasized that processing and value addition are key to maximizing returns, as reliance on raw ginger sales often leads to lower profits and wastage.
Dr. KC Lalmalsawmzauva, Adviser to the Chief Minister, credited the success of ginger procurement to the dedication of farmers in Samthang and nearby areas, noting that the government has already spent about Rs. 18 crore on support price procurement this year.
The programme was chaired by Lianzika, Organising Chairman, with welcome remarks by Lalchungnunga, VCP. Lalparliana, President of the Ginger Association, also addressed the event, reflecting the strong community involvement in Mizoram’s ginger sector.
