Aizawl, May 20: Pharmacies across Mizoram closed their doors on Wednesday as part of a nationwide strike opposing the online sale of medicines. The protest, organized by the All India Organisation of Chemists and Druggists (AIOCD), was intended to draw attention to concerns that the rapid growth of online platforms could erode traditional pharmacy businesses and weaken regulatory oversight.
Pharmacies attached to government and private hospitals remained open, ensuring continued access to essential medicines. Officials from the Mizoram Food and Drugs Administration monitored the situation throughout the day to minimize inconvenience to the public.
The Mizoram Chemists and Druggists Association (MCDA) expressed fears that unregulated online operations could lead to increased misuse of addictive substances. The association alleged that counterfeit and substandard medicines are often found in online markets, with deliveries made by unidentified individuals lacking accountability.
While clarifying that it does not oppose the concept of online pharmacies, the MCDA emphasized its objection to the absence of a clear legal and regulatory framework governing online medicine sales in India. It urged authorities to establish stricter guidelines to safeguard public health and ensure transparency in the sector.
