Prime Minister Narendra Modi Emphasised India’s cultural depth and artisanal excellence during his visit to the United Arab Emirates, presenting a curated selection of gifts that spanned textiles, crafts, and Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged agricultural produce. The gesture highlighted India’s heritage while strengthening the cultural dimension of the India-UAE Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

Among the gifts was Chak Hao Rice from Manipur, known as the “Black Rice” of Northeast India, once reserved for royalty and ceremonial occasions. Its distinctive flavour, deep purple hue, and nutritional richness have made it a prized symbol of Manipur’s agrarian heritage. Modi also presented Maheshwari Silk fabric from Madhya Pradesh, a handloom tradition linked to Queen Ahilyabai Holkar, celebrated for its refined blend of silk and cotton and its reversible borders. Complementing these was a Karimnagar Filigree silver chest, crafted using the intricate repousse technique, depicting a ceremonial elephant procession as a timeless emblem of dignity and prestige.

To the UAE Crown Prince, Modi gifted Mithila Makhana from Bihar, a GI-tagged delicacy harvested from freshwater wetlands, valued for its purity and nutritional richness. Alongside it was a ceremonial dagger adorned with Koftgari work from Rajasthan, an art of inlaying gold and silver wires onto steel, once patronized by Rajput courts. The dagger, echoing the Emirati Khanjar tradition, symbolized courage, dignity, and shared heritage.

The UAE President received Meghalaya’s pineapples, renowned for their sweetness and high nutritional value, Gujarat’s Kesar Mangoes, celebrated as the “Queen of Mangoes” for their saffron-hued pulp and aroma, and a piece of Rogan painting from Kutch, featuring the Tree of Life motif. Rogan art, with its embossed colours and intricate designs, embodies sustainable craftsmanship and cultural continuity.

Beyond the exchange of gifts, Modi and UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan formalized a series of pivotal agreements aimed at fortifying regional security and energy resilience amidst the ongoing West Asian crisis. The visit reinforced the strategic and cultural bonds between India and the UAE, weaving heritage with diplomacy in a gesture of enduring partnership.
