Itanagar, May 27: The Arunachal Pradesh government on Wednesday signed an agreement with Greenko Demwe Power Ltd to develop the 1,750-MW Demwe Lower Hydroelectric Project, marking one of the largest hydropower collaborations with a private sector developer in the state.

The project, to be built on the Lohit river near Parasuram Kund and Brahma Kund, will comprise five generating units of 342 MW each and one unit of 40 MW. It is expected to produce about 7,326 million units of electricity annually, contributing significantly to India’s energy security.

Designed as a major engineering and infrastructure initiative, the project will feature a concrete gravity dam with a maximum height of 163.12 metres and a crest length of 474.35 metres. The reservoir will have a storage capacity of 516.38 million cubic metres and a water spread area of approximately 1,131 hectares. A modern spillway system with multiple gates has been planned to safely manage flood discharge.

The hydropower infrastructure will include six diversion tunnels, underground pressure shafts, and a large surface powerhouse on the Lohit river’s right bank. The powerhouse will house Vertical Francis Turbines operating at a design head of 112 metres and a discharge capacity of 1,729 cumecs.

Officials said the project is expected to deliver major socio-economic benefits to Arunachal Pradesh through employment generation, infrastructure development, improved connectivity, and increased economic activity in the region.
