Agartala, May 30, 2026: The Tripura Guerrilla Returnees’ Demand Committee has announced an indefinite blockade of the Assam–Agartala National Highway and railway lines from June 5, alleging prolonged inaction by the government in addressing their longstanding demands.

Leaders of the organization said the decision was taken after repeated appeals to the authorities failed to yield any positive response. The committee is pressing for the implementation of a five-point charter of demands, including the immediate revival of a comprehensive rehabilitation package worth ₹23 crore and the withdrawal of all pending legal cases against former militants who have surrendered and rejoined mainstream society.

Addressing a press conference, a former militant stated that the affected individuals had laid down their arms before 1998 and returned to normal life following discussions with the then Left Front government. He recalled that on May 22, 2007, the government sanctioned a rehabilitation project worth ₹45 crore to ensure their permanent settlement and socio-economic rehabilitation.

According to the committee, the rehabilitation programme began in 2008 and continued until 2018. However, after a change in government and later due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the implementation of the project came to a standstill. Since then, they claim, no information has been provided regarding the future of the scheme.

The former militant further alleged that nearly ₹22 crore of the sanctioned amount had already been spent, while the remaining funds remain unutilized. The committee is demanding that the government immediately restart the rehabilitation project using the balance amount and fulfill its commitments to the returnees.

Claiming that repeated representations to the administration have gone unanswered, the organization warned that it would launch an indefinite blockade of both road and rail communication networks across the state from June 5 if their demands continue to be ignored.

The proposed agitation is expected to affect transportation and connectivity between Tripura and the rest of the country if no resolution is reached before the deadline.
